Mox's Fate

Posted on March 25, 2008 @ 12:34AM

Major Geranth watched as the once black optical scanning bands flickered Green, Red, Black, and Blue, and recycled. The sequence was flickered quickly and as OPALMOX seemed to be settling down, the sequence slowed, as a chill went up his spine, and the thought occurred to him, “What have we created?” After a time, the optical scanners settled into a deep blue, which gave the biodroid a logical, calculating look.

Ducane continued to watch the readouts on the holoscreen, and finally said, “Alright Major, the basics have been loaded. Mox is an empty book, ready for you to program and train in what ever courses you see fit.”

Maj Geranth watched as the biodroid sat up.

Ducane typed in an additional command, and shook his head. Exhaling loudly, he typed another command in, with no result. Shaking his head he said, “It’s not going to accept any more programming, and I don’t have the time to figure out why, as I’ve got other things that require my attention.”

Maj Geranth looked from Ducane to the biodroid, and back again, then finally said, “I can’t put him in the out in the field like this. What the jeck do you expect me to do with it?”

Ducane calmly replied, “You wanted an adaptable, thinking, bio-unit. Now you have one. Send it to Tosadae or Sangelino. Put it through the same regiment as your spies, er, intelligence agents. Tell me how it performs, what the progression is, and any other vital statistics that you deem necessary. I’ll have the data reviewed, and see where we can do anything to improve the programming sequence and make any other improvements. Hopefully we can continue this series, otherwise it may take a while before I have a chance to completely revamp the system and programming protocols to mesh better with the bacterial biostrips.”

“We need to fully understand its learning curve and processing so that we can replicate and refine the process,” Ducane continued, “Besides, I warned you of the possible implications of utilizing the new biostrip configuration.”

Knowing that he was caught between a rock and a hardspot, he reached out and detached the power supply. The scanning bands darkened to a deeper blue, as the color faded to an empty black.

Finally Maj Geranth said, “Arrange to have this one shipped to Tosadae for evaluation. The other one, run the program again, and ship it to Sangelino.” Glancing at the biodroid, another shiver ran up his spine. Looking at Ducane, he tipped his head towards the door, and they both exited.

The motion sensors of the lab detected movement. Focusing multiple cameras on OPALMOX, a faint blue light could be seen on the scanning strips, and his head picked up slightly.

But who would review the security recording, and when?
