CAPT Yu accepted my records and the orders that I carried.

Looking me up and down, she seemed to be sizing me up, and I had no doubt that she was as dangerous out of the cockpit as she was in it.

Calmly she said, “I hand select my command and pilots.” Glancing at Maj Geranth and CDR Caplan, she continued, “It seems that it has been impressed upon me that it would be in my interest to take you on as a member of my staff. Currently, I have a full cadre of flying officers. But I understand that aside from your untested abilities in the cockpit, I understand that you have an affinity for analysis and intelligence.”

Pausing, CAPT Yu watched and measured everyone’s reactions. Then as if considering something, a mischievous glint shone in her eyes, “But I do have an assignment for you, and just the officer to be your sponsor.”

Tapping her wristsponder she said, “PCs Nassis and Dawnborn, give me an update on the status of Pita and Stitch.”

PC3 Nassis called back, “Ma’am, Stitch is in the training office, working on the rosters that you asked for.”

PC2 Dawnborn called in, “Ma’am, Pita just wrapped up her training mission, and is prepping for final. ETA 15 mikes.”

CAPT Yu responded, “Copy, when Pita rolls in, have her and Stitch report to my office directly.”

Looking back at me, she said, “LT “Pita” Blackburn is my intelligence officer. You’ll be reporting to her and doing as she instructs. Anything that she tells you, you can assume is coming from me, so you follow her orders to the letter. LT “Stitch” Delaney is my training officer. Since you’re qualified to fly, you’ll be required to maintain your flight-logs, and coordinate with him for all of your flight and VA training. Understood?”

Nodding, I said, “Yes Ma’am.”

CAPT Yu continued, “I don’t have an aircraft to assign to you, and I don’t plan on assigning you one or a PC in the near future, but I’m sure that the Major and the Commander can come up with a hangar queen from somewhere for you to use while we’re here.”

Nodding again, I said “Thank you Ma’am.” All the while I tried to remember anything about the term Hangar Queen, but nothing was coming to mind, but somehow I was doubtful that royalty had anything to with it.
