Details on the Tournament

Kam was in a good mood. I was wondering if Havel had calmed down a bit lately,

“She’s still crazy,” he said.

Oh right, I thought.
“So what is it then?” I asked.
“We’re in,” he said.
“In?” I asked.
“The advanced flight tournament,” he said, “Havel got us in, it was weeks ago that she asked, but it’s gong through. We get to fly!

We were pretty excited.
“All we have to do is qualify,” he said. We hit the simulators hard. Kam and I wrote new environments into the simulator to make things as difficult as possible for ourselves.

“So how does this tournament work?” I asked.
“It has three qualifying rounds,” said Kam. “The first is a race. through canyons near the eastern coast of Mu. The second is a series of maneuvers. We pull them off, to a specific degree of accuracy, we get the points. The last, is one-on-one combat.”

“Sounds dangerous,” I said.
“Well, it is,” said Kam. “That’s why only the best get into this. This is the thing that pushes you into the big leagues. Provided you survive. The Canyon Race is dangerous, so you gotta choose self-preservation or victory. The maneuvers in the second round are straight-forward and safe enough, so long as you’re not utterly terrible. The third round, we use dummy, non-explosive warheads and non-destructive lasers, instead of deteurium beams. In theory it’s safe, but their are dangers.”

“Ahh, well, life wouldn’t be too interesting without a few risks,” I said, smiling.
“That’s my boy,” said Kam.
